We know Adam Katz Sinding from Fashion Weeks (of course) and we always admired his style. He is one of a kind, special, different from many others and he is one of the most appreciated photographers in the street style industry right now…And believe us this is not an easy thing because in this field the competition is huge. Today we are happy to announce you that Adam is coming to Romania for Digital Divas and you can meet him in person on 27th May if you register HERE. Till then we invite you to discover Adam through an exclusive interview ! Enjoy it, sweethearts!
You started taking photos…11 years ago, but I started Le 21ème 7.5 years ago.
How was the beginning? Like anything, it takes practice. My first photos were likely pretty bad. I still have them on my website. I think it’s important to keep that stuff so you can see your evolution.
You studied …Art History at the University of Washington in Seattle.
What do you love most about your job? Traveling and taking photos! Doing a hobby for a living!
Do you have favorites photographers? Yes, I think that Diane Arbus is probably my biggest inspiration. She had a lot of guts to do what she did. I also like Viviane Sassen and Hans Feurer.
What do you think that helped you to be noticed and to be one of the best right now? To be noticed? Hard work. To be the best I can be? Hard work. I work ALL the time. It’s not easy.
What do you think about street style? I think “street style” is boring. I think that shooting people on the street is interesting. I try to put both together and TRY to make it interesting.
For street style you prefer fashion weeks or you like the every day real street style? I like everyday people, but I’m often too scared to shoot people when it’s not fashion week.
Do you feel the competition? Absolutely. Go outside any fashion show. There are over 100 photographers. Closer to 200 probably. It’s insane.
Do you fear competition? Maybe, I’m not sure. But I definitely use it to keep me from being lazy!
What’s your goal or goals? To do what I do…I like my job. I just need an asst.
First feeling when you saw your photos published… Excited, obviously. I think anyone would be. It’s really weird to think that something you “create” is of interest to others!
You seem arrogant for a lot of people … In reality you are shy or you are really a little picky? Man, that’s harsh…ouch. Maybe I AM arrogant and don’t know it. Personally I am shy, insecure, and scared of the people I shoot. However, I am VERY picky, as its my job. If I shot everyone just to “be nice” then no one would trust me. There would be no integrity.
Anna Wintour or Anna dello Russo? Wintour. Easy.
NY, Paris, London or Milan? Paris. Easy.
Favorite city in the world so far? Copenhagen. Easy.
What do you expect from Bucharest? Whenever I go to a new city I come with ZERO expectations. I want to have clear eyes and not be narrow-sighted. I know myself too well. If I have an idea in my head I follow it and ignore everything around me. So, I expect nothing. And I am sure I will love it.
Do you prefer listening or talking? Talking. I hate silence. Unless I’m trying to sleep.
Favorite magazines? W, Purple or Numéro.
Do you like to read? Do you have a favorite book? I can’t read anymore. Too much stress. But I love 1984, Catch 22, Glamourama, Burmese Tales, and American Psycho.
During long flights you read, sleep or watch movies? Sleep. I’m scared of flying. Yeah…sucks.
How much do you sleep per night during fashion month? 3-4 hours. For 30 days.
Are you a party animal? No, no time. But I like to go to parties, but generally they depress me, as I am thinking about how much work I have to do when I get home, and about how long the next day will be.
Your favorite party during fashion week was…. I didn’t go to many. I guess “New York, New York” in Paris because my friend David from Seattle randomly showed up.
What makes you to shoot a look? Movement and confidence in the subject
Many people think that your “job” is an easy one. Just fun! Can you tell us more about what this job means for people to understand?
HAHAH! Really!? It’s the hardest job I’ve ever had. We work 20+ hours a day every day. Right now I’m writing this from Moscow Airport on a 7 hour layover before my flight to Almaty, Kazakhstan. My year so far since Jan 1, 2015: NYC, London, Florence, Milan, Paris, Copenhagen, Paris, New York, London, Milan, Paris, Reykjavik, Tokyo, Prague, Moscow, Kiev, Moscow, St Petersburg, Melbourne, Sydney, Tbilisi, Copenhagen, today will be Almaty, then on Monday Copenhagen, then a few days later, Tbilisi, then NYC, then after 3 days, London, Paris, Cannes, back home to NYC for 3 days then London, Florence, Milan, Paris, BUCHAREST …etc.
It’s NOT easy. Being on airplanes. No time to eat right, to sleep right, to exercise. So much travel you cannot have a real relationship. You never see your friends unless they are also following the fashion weeks.
